Cervical screening is a test that checks for early signs of cervical cancer. When cervical cancer is found early, it is easier to treat. During a cervical screen, your GP will take a cell sample from your cervix by gently inserting a speculum into your vagina. The samples will be checked for signs of human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus that causes cervical cancer.

You will receive your results up to four weeks after your screen. If your results are normal, you may not need another screen for five years. If your results indicate that further tests are needed, your GP will contact you to discuss next steps.

People can now collect their own sample for cervical screening. If you are able to and decide collecting your own sample is the best option for you, your GP will give you a swab and instructions on how to collect your sample. It is simple, quick and safe to do.
