What is mastitis and breast abscess?

Mastitis is swelling in the breast. Most times, it is caused by an infection. It usually happens in breastfeeding women but can happen in all women and men.

If you have mastitis, you may have redness and feel pain in your breast. You may also feel unwell with a fever or chills. If mastitis is not treated, it may form a breast abscess which will need to be drained.

It is safe to continue breastfeeding while you have mastitis.
