Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a serious lung disease that blocks airflow and makes it difficult to breathe. People with advanced or end-stage COPD are in the final stage of the disease, also known as stage four.
In the final stage, airflow is severely limited and complications are life-threatening. Treatments may no longer work. People with end-stage COPD have likely already lived for years with COPD.
People with the disease, as well as families and carers, may wish to talk to their GP when symptoms become too difficult to manage, or if they feel it is time. Palliative care for people with advanced COPD aims to control physical symptoms, feel comfortable and understand what to expect in future.
