Elder abuse is defined by the World Health Organization as "a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, within a relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person".

Elder abuse can take many forms including financial, psychological, physical and sexual abuse, and intentional or unintentional neglect. Different forms of abuse can happen at the same time.
