Zika is a virus that spreads through infected mosquito bites. It can also be sexually transmitted. In most cases, Zika is mild. But it can be dangerous for pregnant women.

A pregnant woman with Zika can pass the virus to her baby which may cause birth defects. Pregnant women should avoid travelling to locations where Zika is present.

In many cases, the Zika virus has a mild effect. If symptoms do occur, they include fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. Treatment usually involves rest, hydration and pain relief. Your GP can talk to you about treatment options.
