Low Income Household Energy Rebate

The NSW Government provides assistance measures to help households with their energy costs. Eligibility for the Low Income Household Rebate are electricity account holders who hold either a:

A) Pensioner Concession Card issued by either Centrelink or the Department of Veteran's Affairs (DVA)

B) Gold Card issued by the DVA marked with either:

  • War Widow or War Widower Pension
  • Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI)
  • Disability Pension

C) Health Care Card issued by Centrelink as a result of receiving one of a number of income support payments from the Commonwealth.

 

How to obtain the rebate

Eligible customers contact their electricity supplier or local electricity distributor directly. Contact phone numbers can be found on their electricity bill.

Life Support Rebate

If a patient requires certain medical equipment in their home to sustain their life, such as a respirator / ventilator, they may be entitled to a rebate on their electricity bill.

The list of equipment eligible includes the following:

  • oxygen concentrator
  • PAP devices
  • respirator
  • enteral feeding pump
  • phototherapy equipment
  • home dialysis
  • total parenteral nutrition machine
  • external heart pump machine

 

How to obtain the rebate

A Life Support application form completed by a doctor is required to confirm the equipment is required. The Life Support Rebate is additional to any other energy rebate to which they may be entitled.

Medical Energy Rebate

The rebate is for eligible patients who have a medically diagnosed inability to self-regulate body temperature when exposed to extremes (hot or cold) of environmental temperatures. It may be associated with certain medical conditions such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.

Eligibility for the Medical Energy Rebate is based on the following criteria:

1. Either the account holder or anyone residing at the residence must have an inability to self-regulate body temperature. This requires the completion of a signed form by a medical practitioner who has been treating you for at least three months, and

2. The account holder must have one of the following concession cards:

  • Pensioner Concession Card issued by either Centrelink or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
  • Gold Card issued by the DVA
  • Health Care Card issued by Centrelink as a result of receiving one of a number of income support payments from the Commonwealth.

 

How to obtain the rebate

Eligible customers should submit a Medical Energy Rebate application form to their electricity supplier.

The Medical Energy Rebate can be received in addition to other assistance such as the Low Income Household Rebate, the Life Support Rebate and the Energy Accounts Payment Assistance (EAPA) scheme. The Medical Energy Rebate is also available to long-term residents of caravan parks.
