What is down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a genetic condition. It is not an illness or disease. It is caused when a person is born with an extra chromosome. People from all backgrounds and ages have children with down syndrome.

In Australia, 1 in 1,100 children are born with down syndrome. Those with Down Syndrome are more at risk of some health issues of which include:
  • heart defects
  • hypothyroidism
  • problems with eyesight
  • problems with hearing
  • digestive issues
  • low muscle tone
  • weak bones
Despite the problems faced by those with Down Syndrome, improved health care, support and education improve their quality of life.
