What is it?

Periods happen as part of the natural menstrual cycle. They usually happen every month. It is normal to miss periods at different times in your life. An absent period (Amenorrhoea) is when you don't get your period at all. The two types of amenorrhea are:

  • Primary amenorrhoea - When the menstrual period has not started by the age of 16 years
  • Secondary amenorrhoea - When the periods stop for 3 months or more in a row

Your GP will talk to you about your medical history and the reason you might not be getting your period.
