What is Trauma Informed Care?

Trauma is defined as an event or series of events that has imposed harm on an individual or community. The long-term impacts include adverse effects on a person’s mental, physical, social, emotional and or spiritual health.

Trauma informed care recognises and responds to signs, symptoms and risks of trauma. The aim is to better support the health needs of patients who have gone through trauma (acute and or complex)

This type of care helps health care professionals build safety, trust, collaborate and empower their patients. It also considers cultural safety.
