It is very common for children to develop lumps in their necks. The most common cause is enlarged lymph nodes following an upper respiratory tract infection. Occasionally a single large and tender lymph node can be due to a bacterial infection and require antibiotics. Long standing lumps in the midline can be due to cysts or lymph node inflammation. Thyroid nodules are rare in children. Rarely, persistent non tender lumps can be due to cancers such as lymphoma or leukaemia.

If your doctor is concerned they may arrange further testing. This may involve blood tests, or imaging such as an ultrasound.
