What is it?

Back pain is a general term that describes any type of pain felt on the spine or back area. It can be mild or serious. Back pain is common and affects around 80% of Australians at some point. 

Common causes of back pain include poor posture, overuse, heavy lifting, sitting for too long and sleeping in an awkward position. Often, it isn’t possible to find the direct cause of back pain. Your GP will assess your symptoms and develop a treatment plan. Most people can improve their back pain with simple treatments, like changing habits and pain-relief medications. Treatment may involve looking at the underlying cause of the back pain. Serious forms of back pain may need more intensive treatment.
