What is it?

For women who have had one or more caesarean sections in the past, you may have the option of a vaginal birth for your next pregnancy.
After a caesarean section, your options for giving birth include:

  • Vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC)
  • Elective repeat caesarean section (ERCS)

Each option has different risks and benefits.

What will my GP do now?

Early in your pregnancy, your GP will provide you with information and answer your questions about VBAC and caesarean. They may:

  • Ask you questions about your previous caesarean section(s)
  • Give you written or verbal information about VBAC and caesarean
  • Help you understand what your risks and benefits are for each option

Based on this information and guidance you will decide which is the right option for you.
If you choose to have a VBAC, your GP will refer you to your local hospital’s antenatal clinic or a private obstetrician for your ongoing pregnancy care.

What can I do?

Carefully read over the information your GP provides.

Note down any questions or concerns you have from this information.

Take your time when making a decision. If you are unsure of which option to choose, speak to your GP.
